Today I tried to finally implement more trackback functionality for this blog (I wanted to trackback to a comment that I made in which I mentioned an entry in Betalogue, Pierre Igot’s blog). I failed. I could not get the trackback cgi scripts offered by Moveable Type to run and communicate with blosxom, even though others obviously were able to get this running. I did not invest too much time, since it seems that Rael Dornfest will publish blosxom 3.0 in a reasonable timeframe. Then I will take another stab at implementing trackbacks.

Trouble with trackback.
Sunday, April 18th, 2004Code overhaul.
Tuesday, March 30th, 2004This blog is now written in XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Which should be an invisible change except for the different W3C badge in the column to the right. Another change is much more visible: during the overhaul I realized that the default font size for the blog was set to 10 pixels. I changed it to a relative setting and made it a bit bigger (still set to the value “small” though) – this should increase readability and reduce everbody’s squinting at the screen, though it might not be as pretty as the old setting.
Comment spam deleted.
Friday, March 26th, 2004If you missed the ‘opportunity’ to check what I meant in Tuesday’s entry, I have uploaded a screenshot of the comments of this hot topic
, to quote daniel…
Scandal!
Wednesday, March 24th, 2004I just checked the hot topics link in the column to the right to see if anyone has commented on any not-immediately-visible entry and guess what I found: someone is spamming my blog with porn links! This is the first time I noticed this, I haven’t even heard that people do this. How I hate that. If you want to check out what happened take a look at these spammed comments. I will remove this stuff tomorrow, so that you have a chance to see yourself (if you want to). Things like this are the reasons why people put disclaimers on their sites, I guess…
New features.
Monday, January 19th, 2004I added some new stuff to the blog. In the column to the right you can now choose a category by which to browse this blog. This was always possible – you had to click on the category link below the article to do that. As not everybody is technical-minded enough to use this feature in such an implicit way, I put explicit links to the main categories into the sidebar.
The other feature is really new; I had to install a plug-in for blosxom to enable this feature. The plug-in is called recentwritebacks. It allows everybody to add the ending “?recent=x” (without quotes and a number instead of the x) to the URL of my blog and then see all entries that were commented during the specified last x (number) of days. To make this feature more accessible I put a new link into the sidebar which takes you to the entries commented during the last week. Check it out!
Spreading blogness.
Sunday, January 18th, 2004Today I have registered this blog at several sites: http://www.bloghaus.net/, http://www.weblogverzeichnis.de/, http://blogg.de/ and http://www.blogplan.de/.
We’ll see if that has an effect and what the effect will be. Any potential new visitors to this blog: you are welcome!
Getting an RSS feed of my blog.
Sunday, November 23rd, 2003I reposted the link to the RSS feed of this site. With this link you can use the RSS client of your choice to be informed when a new entry for my blog has been written. You don’t use RSS yet and have no idea which client to use? For those of you using a Mac, I can recommend two freeware apps: SlashDock or NetNewsWire Lite. If you are a windows person, you might want to try Feedreader – it has been put on an internet software collection CD-ROM by the German computer magazine c’t and it is a sourceforge project, both being good recommendations. I have no information about RSS readers on Linux… :-(>
Updated to Blosxom 2.0.
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003Today I updated from version 2.0rc5 to version number 2.0. Not a lot of code was changed, so I guess there shouldn’t be any trouble for you. If something is not working correctly on your browser/machine, please tell me.
There’s another minor technical detail to report: finally this blog actually validates as correct HTML 4.01 Transitional. As inquiring minds might have found out there was one incorrectly tagged post at the end of the queue which falls out with the posting of this entry. Yay!
Archive added.
Tuesday, July 15th, 2003Since a significant part of the entries that I made is not visible anymore I added an archive in the column to the right. Just click on the links to see the entries that were posted during the respective month.
Less entries visible.
Thursday, July 10th, 2003To make access to the blog a bit faster again, I reduced the number of entries that will be shown on this page from 40 to 30. If you think I should keep the entry list longer, even if it has a negative impact on the time it takes for this page to appear on your screen, say so.
Some more optimizations.
Thursday, July 10th, 2003Yesterday I finished fiddling with the HTML and CSS code of my web pages. *sigh*
You probably won’t notice any differences, but everything is much better now. ;-) The blog displays exactly as it should in a ton of different browsers: Internet Explorer 5.0 on Win98, 6.0 on WinXP, 5.23 on MacOS X, several different Mozilla/Firebird/Camino builds on different platforms, Opera 6.02, and Safari (which uses a tweaked version of the rendering engine of Konqueror on Linux). Only the trusty iCab has it’s usual problems with the correct rendering of pretty basic CSS code. But the page still works nicely even in iCab.
The code for my other pages has undergone some optimizations too. It might now be rendering a tad bit faster. It has also been revised to be even more accessible to handicapped people, and people with text browsers or slow connections. Hopefully this also has a positive impact on my google ranking, because I am now using the appropriate tags wherever possible (i.e. I am formatting the contents list using list tags, I am formatting my contact information using the address tag etc.)
Guest Entry Trial by Chr
Saturday, June 21st, 2003This is just to try if I am granted access to these selected pages by virtue of the password I was generously given on another occasion.
IT WORKED!!! But now duty in the form of the tedious job of appartment-hunting calls. See ya later, as the Aussie likes to put it (even when the chances of seeing again later come close to being zero).
To Mannem!
Monday, June 2nd, 2003I’ll see if I can take some pictures there and perhaps post them here. Some new media added to the blog…
Migration of project description from self.html to this blog!
Thursday, May 29th, 2003During the next days I will start to migrate my project description from my “offical style” self description page (check it out) to this blog.
This will hopefully enable me to put regular updates about the progress of my dissertation on this page. Then YOU can comment it.
Comment system implemented
Thursday, May 29th, 2003I now have a working comments system installed – you are all welcome to comment on anything I write here.
Now, it can begin
Thursday, May 29th, 2003Well, well, setting up this blog thing was quite easy. It only took me an hour or two to figure out the customizations, and get the wiki-style plugin (wikieditish) to work. But now everything is up and running. Amazing. I guess I will be tweaking some of the blog settings pretty soon nonetheless ;)
New comments layout.
Monday, July 7th, 2003Since I implemented the comment function in this blog I have been unhappy with it’s layout. Today I dug a little deeper into the way the comment stuff works (the “writeback plugin”). Interpreting the bones and shards that I found in the hole that i dug, I was able to generate a new, hopefully more pleasing layout for you. Any feedback or comments? ;-)
