Castle building can be done by consulting a design book detailing ten actual medieval castles that you can learn all about and then adopt on as your own. Or you can start from scratch. Once the walls are up, it's time to build up your empire, dealing with enemy attacks and strategic maneuvers, sending out and receiving spies and messengers, and all the while try to gain enough points to win you the Pope's blessing to be crowned king.

    Castles is a multifaceted game that comes with a slew of really useful, clear resources for help and guidance, including an onscreen tutorial that can be accessed at any point during play and exited to return to your game in progress. You have options to turn on and off many features of play, and four skill levels leave room for differing abilities. The graphics are good, and the video, though often blurred and choppy, is valuable. There are so many ways to navigate through Castles that it never becomes tiresome, and while you're playing, you're going to learn a lot of history and architecture as well."

    1999 hat die UNESCO das Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv in die Liste Memory of the World aufgenommen: "More than 145,000 recordings of music representing the cultural heritage of many cultures all over the world excluding Western Art and Pop music are stored on completely different sound carriers such as Edison-phonograms, analog and digital tapes, and all kinds of discs (from 78 shellac discs to LPs and CDs). This is a world-wide unique sound collection with universal significance and intercultural dimensions. "

    "Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv Celebrates 100th Anniversary :

    The Berlin Phonogramm-Archive was founded in September 1900 and soon became an important center of Comparative Musicology. To celebrate this important anniversary an international conference titled '100 Years Berlin Phonogramm-Archive: Retrospective, Perspective and Interdisciplinary Approaches of the Sound Archives of the World ' was held from September 27--October 1, 2000, at the Enthnologisches Museum (formerly known as the Völkerkundemuseum) in Berlin, Germany. More than 60 papers were presented by archivists and ethnomusicologists from over 30 countries. UCLA was represented by Daniel Neuman, Anthony Seeger, and Louise Spear.

    In September 1900 a Siamese theater group of musicians and dancers visited Berlin. Carl Stumpf, the psychologist at the University of Berlin, and Otto Abraham, a Berlin physician who published many works on music psychology, recorded the Siamese theater group with an Edison cylinder recorder. As a result of this scientific study, Stumpf published his oft-read 'Tonsystem und Musik der Siamsen ' ['Tone System and the Music of Siam'].

    The Siamese cylinder recordings formed the foundation of the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv, begun by Carl Stumpf in 1900. In 1905 Erich Moritz von Hornbostel took over the Phonogramm-Archiv and made its development his life’s work until 1933. The Phonogramm-Archiv was headed by Marius Schneider from 1934-45; Kurt Reinhard from 1952-68; Dieter Christensen from 1968-72; and Artur Simon from 1972-present.

    At one of the memorable conference events, the Phonogramm-Archiv's Edison Cylinder No. 1, the Siamese orchestra recorded by Carl Stumpf in 1900, was played over the auditorium's sound system for all to hear. The recording was followed by a live performance of the Das Prasit Thawon Ensemble, which can be traced back to the Siamese theater group recorded in 1900. Twelve musicians and ten dancers traveled from Thailand to help celebrate the Phonogramm-Archiv’s anniversary.

    Other musicians came as well. Liang David Mingyue, who played at the Phonogramm-Archiv's first concert in 1975, played music from China on the qin; Karaikudi S. Subramanian, who also performed at the Phonogramm-Archiv in 1975, played music from India on the vina; and Trân Quang Hai played music from Vietnam on the dàn tranh. Bosoma Sheriff from Borno, Nigeria, performed a song about recordings from the 'Borno Music Documentation Project' being preserved at the Phonogramm-Archiv; and Famoudou Konaté played drum rhythms from Guinea. All of these musicians can be found on recordings published by the Phonogramm-Archiv.

    World War II interrupted the activities of the Phonogramm-Archiv. Most of the cylinder recordings were packed up between December 1944 and January 1945, and during 1945 four-fifths of them were sent to East Germany and one-fifth to locations in West Germany. In 1950 approximately 9,000 cylinders were confiscated by the Russians and sent to Leningrad. That same year a significant number of 78-rpm disc recordings were smashed by Russian soldiers in the courtyard of the museum that housed the Phonogramm-Archiv.

    During the 1950s the cylinders stored in West Germany were returned to the Phonogramm-Archiv. In 1959 most of the cylinders in Leningrad were returned to East Berlin, but not to the Phonogramm-Archiv, which was located in West Berlin. Erich Stockmann watched over the cylinders in East Berlin, and in the 1960s he assisted with the return of some cylinders until the East German government put a stop to it.

    On May 31, 1990, a sealed room on Unter den Linden in East Berlin was opened in the presence of Erich Stockmann and Artur Simon, and the recordings were viewed and counted in preparation for their return to the Phonogramm-Archiv. Early the next year, 27,347 cylinders and 1,283 78-rpm discs, which had been gone since 1945, were returned to the Phonogramm-Archiv.

    A project titled 'The Saving of the Largest Collection of Old Sound Documents of Traditional Music from Around the World' was begun at the Phonogramm-Archiv in 1992 and continues today under the direction of Suzanne Ziegler, musicologist, and Albrecht Weidmann, sound engineer.

    Beginning in 1907 the Phonogramm-Archiv made arrangements with the Presto company to galvanize its wax cylinders. During that process a copper negative, called a galvano, was made from the wax cylinder. In most cases the wax cylinder would be destroyed during the process, but from the galvano many copies could be made. Copies were kept at the Phonogramm-Archiv, given to collectors, and shared with other archives around the world.

    As part of the project begun in 1992, a specially developed red wax is poured inside the galvanos to make new cylinder copies. Student employees melt chips of wax in a pot on a burner and then painstakingly pour the melted wax into the galvanos. It takes about one hour for the wax to harden enough so that the wax can be removed from the galvano. The red-wax cylinders are then copied onto DAT tape.

    It is hoped that the DAT copies can be shared with the recorded culture groups and with archives around the world. Participants at the 100th anniversary conference were delighted to hear the old recordings and were, in some cases, able to provide helpful documentation."

Millenium Auction goes beyond even that. It's an eye-opening, ear-perking, sensibility-stunning blast of unique vision. The game is about art in the future; more important, the game is itself a work of art. An exquisitely crafted execution of a startling concept, this CD draws us into a new world with fantastic audio, incredibly smooth and detailed graphics, and a nonviolent, gently competitive scenario.

    Here's the story: High-rolling art collectors have gathered for an auction of cultural relics.The items range from standards of our day (paintings by the great masters, for example), to pieces that reflect tantalizing glimpses of an unknown future - such as one of Axel Grease's tattoos, a personal ozone shield, and a photograph of J. Edgar "Mary" Hoover. To begin the game, you must identify with one of the supplied personalities, although several real-life people can attend the auction together, as long as they can fit around the same keyboard. Dossiers on all the computer-generated personalities are available. When you enter the gallery, the game takes on the feel of an adventure. Wander around, look at objects, and eavesdrop on conversations among the other collectors.

    There is not a computer gamer in the world who won't be stunned by the beautiful clarity of the graphics. And during this portion the game evidences a slightly unhinged, surreal view. Words and faces transform into butterflies and masks. We are supposed to gather clues about our fellow bidders during these conversations, and these artful distortions might contain psychological clues. You might also stumble upon newscasts and newspapers, offering hints about the potential value of the objects you'll be bidding on.

    Eventually it's time to enter the auction room itself. Things move fast here, and the restlessly shifting graphic perspectives of the room and bidders makes it feel like a television production. Audio response to all the bids - both yours and the computer's - is astoundingly fast. The auctioneer conveys a distinct and amusing personality and runs the show with a masterful hand. The game is simple, devoid of tricks and surprises. The goal is simply to increase your net worth; you can feel satisfied if you've done better than the others, but the game isn't focused on winning and losing.

    During the entire Millennium Acution experience, this reviewer's only small complaint was with the main menu screen, whose icons, confusingly, need to be dragged, not just clicked on. Aside from that, this is gloriously rendered originality all the way. The darkness of Millennium Auction is balanced by its almost punk humor und nearly psychedelic flights of graphic fancy. It doesn't just use multimedia technology; it delights in and relishes it. Although its vision of the future is as depressing as that of most other games (and an entire bonus CD movie documents the "history" of that future), it is incredibly refreshing to see a game without explosions. An amazing product" (S. 309).

Characterstically for the genre, Cyberia ist not sanguine about the twenty-first century. It's just been discovered beneath the frozen reaches of Asia, and your're cast in the role of Zak, who must infiltrate the stronghold and find it. The program keeps track of milestones that you've reached and stands ready to resume play at the most recent one; manual saving is blissfully unnecessary. Um alle Unwägbarkeiten auszuräumen entsendet er aber noch einen weiteren Boten, der eine geheime Urkunde überbringen soll. Es ist dies der Augsburger Kanoniker Berthold, der sich mit seinem jungen Neffen Anselm auf den Weg macht. Anselm ist froh dem Klosteralltag zu entrinnen, denn er will eigentlich lieber Reisekaufmann werden als die strenge Klosterzucht auf sich nehmen! Beten, Lernen, Arbeiten bestimmt seinen Tageslauf - jetzt lockt das Abenteuer. It's cool, man! Die beiden sind auf ihrem gefährlichen Weg über die Alpen, zusammen mit ihrem treuen Esel, ganz auf sich gestellt. Der Computerspieler befindet sich in der Rolle der beiden "Reiseabenteurer". Strategie und Spielgeschick bestimmen den Ablauf. Welche Ausrüstung benötigt man? Welcher Weg führt am schnellsten ans Ziel? Reicht der Proviant? Wie kommt man unbeschadet über die Alpen? Gefährliche Weggenossen, reissende Flüsse, Steinschlag und eisige Kälte - all diese Schwierigkeiten müssen bewältigt werden. Und gleichzeitig läuft die Uhr gegen den Konkurrenten Thietmar, der keinen Fehler macht..."

    "Der Titel der CD wirft ein anschauliches Licht auf die Gefühlszustände der Menschen in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Der langandauernde Krieg liess fast zwei Generationen erwachsen werden, die bis 1648 keinen Frieden kannten. Das Erleben der kriegerischen Verheerungen war verbunden mit einem Gefühl der vollständigen Ohnmacht.

    Die Sehnsucht der Menschen nach Frieden schlug sich in zahlreichen geistlichen Liedern nieder, die zum Teil noch heute gesungen werden. Parallel dazu wurden anlässlich politischer Ereignisse, wie z. B. Reichstagen, Festmusiken in Auftrag gegeben. Häufig gaben sie dem Wunsch nach Frieden Ausdruck und wandten sich mit dieser Bitte - zumindest indirekt - an die Potentaten. Diese Bemühungen der Tonsetzer waren allerdings vergeblich: Erst als das völlige Scheitern der Kriegsführung offenkundig war, gab es nach langwierigen Verhandlungen Frieden.

    In der Folge ertönte Freudenmusik in Kirchen und Festsälen ebenso wie unter freiem Himmel bei mit aller barocker Pracht gefeierten Friedensfesten. Diese Musik wird den gequälten Seelen der Menschen Erleichterung und Befreiung verschafft haben."

    "Suite 1648 eröffnet in vier musikalischen Kapiteln einen spannenden und ungewöhnlichen Blick auf die münsterische und europäische Geschichte in der Zeit um 1648. Innerhalb der Handlung durchlebt die Hauptfigur Fabio Chigi verschiedene Phasen der Geschichte und gibt dabei die Eindrücke und Ereignisse im Spiegel früherer Sichtweisen wieder, die als Kontrast zu modernen Gepflogenheiten gezeigt werden.

    Aus den gesammelten, in lateinischer Sprache verfassten Sonetten Fabio Chigis und vielen anderen literarischen Quellen schöpfend, beschreibt die Suite 1648 die zeitgenössischen Beobachtungen bedeutender Persönlichkeiten, die Ess- und Trinkgewohnheiten, die typische Kleidung, die Architektur und vieles mehr. Reiseeindrücke, Kriegserinnerungen, Dankgebete, Neuheiten vom Stand der Verhandlungen und die Botschaft des Friedensreiters wechseln dabei mit ganz alltäglichen Eindrücken des Lebens aus der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts.

    Averkamps Suite 1648 macht Geschichte durch musikalische und textliche Inhalte erhörbar. Dabei sind Streichquartett und Stimmen, die noch durch die Percussions-Instrumente ergänzt werden, gleichwertige Partner, die aufeinander reagieren und neue klangliche Strukturen entwickeln. Mal begleitend beim Albizzi-Brief, mal konträr bei den Kanonen aus friedlicher Idylle, mal unisono oder auch als rein textliche Sequenz beim Aufruf an die Redlichkeit erlebt man eine Reise mit Alltäglichem und Besonderem."
