In the years 1995-1999 the morphology and ultrastructure of shells and radulae, the biology of reproduction, embryogenesis (with focus on the embryonic shell), and the distribution of endemic gastropods were investigated.

The project was headed on the german side by Dr. Riedel and was conducted together with Dr. Sitnikova, the local specialist of the Limnological Institute Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LIN SB RAS) in Irkutsk.

Since 1999 the main topic of research lies on ecological features as reproduction, feeding and food choice, as well as parasitology.

General view on the systematic and taxonomy of endemic Gastropoda of Lake Baikal:

There are several attempts to classify the endemic gastropod taxa of Lake Baikal.
In order to give an orientation, these attempts are exhibited in a synoptic table:

Am eigenen Schleimfaden "hängende Schnecke"

Baicalia turriformis attached by slime
