Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is the oldest and most prestigious institution of higher education in Bulgaria with over 120 years of history. The University offers education in over 70 degree programmes in all major areas of sciences, humanities and social sciences and both in fundamental theoretical and applied areas with its teaching staff of 1200 lecturers. Sofia University is a major research body in the country and manages over 3000 projects annually of which about 60 are carried out under EC programs and over 40 are in partnership with research institutions in USA, Japan, Russia, etc. The Department of European Studies was established in 1998 and employs 25 full time and 30 adjunct lecturers. It is the leading teaching and research centre in the country in the field of European studies. The degree programmes cover Bachelor, Master and Doctoral level. The Bachelor degree programme offers specializations in economics, law and media studies for about 50 students per year. The scientific research activities of the Department includes the areas of European civilization process, formation of European cultural identity, European and Euro-Atlantic integration, institutions and policies of the EU, external affairs of the EU, European political systems, EU law and legal cohesion, economic aspects of integration, programme and project management, media studies in Europe and information society.
