Conference Venue

The 2005 Berlin Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change will be held in the city of Potsdam near Berlin at the facilities of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Science Park Albert Einstein. The Science Park Albert Einstein with its architectural masterpieces such as the Einstein-Tower is one of the most prominent historic sites for the development of earth sciences in Germany, including among its alumni Nobel prize winners such as Albert Einstein and A.A. Michelson. A guided tour of some historic sites will be arranged.

The registration desk on Friday morning, 2 December, will be in House H.

How to Get to the Hotel and the Conference Venue

Arriving by air:

There are three airports in Berlin: Tegel (TXL), Schönefeld (SXF), and Tempelhof (THF). Most international flights arrive at Tegel or Schönefeld.

From Tegel Airport, take the Airport Express Bus X9 to Station Zoologischer Garten, locally known as Station "Zoo". From there take the Regional Express Train (R1) to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you can either walk to Hotel Mercure (about 5-7 minutes) or take a cab.
From Schönefeld Airport, take the metropolitan train (S-Bahn, marked by green "S" signs) S 9 to Station Zoologischer Garten. From there take the Regional Express Train (R1) to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you can either walk to Hotel Mercure (about 5-7 minutes) or take a cab.

Arriving by train:

Many trains to Berlin go via Potsdam and stop at station “Potsdam Hauptbahnhof”. From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you can either walk to Hotel Mercure (about 5-7 minutes) or take a cab.

If you arrive in Berlin not via Potsdam , please stop at Station Zoologischer Garten, locally known as Station "Zoo". From there take the Regional Express Train (R1) to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you can either walk to Hotel Mercure (about 5-7 minutes) or take a cab.

Hotel Information

We have reserved a sufficient number of hotel rooms in the Hotel Mercure, one of the largest hotels in walking distance to the Science Park Albert Einstein. Please contact the hotel directly for a binding reservation under your name within the “Berlin Conference” contingent. Please ask for a confirmation of your booking. There will be free bus transfer to the conference venue from Hotel Mercure.

If you did not intend to stay at the Hotel Mercure, you find other accommodation options in Potsdam below. We advise to stay directly in Potsdam and not in Berlin, since the commuting distance between Berlin and Potsdam can range between half an hours to one hour, depending on the location in Berlin.

How to get to the conference venue from the Pension Unicat:

Walk three minutes to the Subway station “S Potsdam Babelsberg”, take the S1 to Potsdam Central Station (“Potsdam Hauptbahnhof”) which is the next and final stop.
From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you might take a taxi („Wissenschaftspark Albert Einstein, Telegrafenberg, Potsdam“). In addition, we will organise a bus shuttle that will pick you up at the station Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and bring you to the venue. Alternatively, the walking distance is 15 minutes.

How to get to the conference venue from the Pension Steinegger:

Walk to the tram station “Robert-Baberske-Strasse””, take the tram #92 to “Potsdam Schloß Charlottenhof” or tram #96 to “Potsdam Kirschallee” and get off at “Potsdam Hauptbahnhof” (the trip takes about 18 minutes).

From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, you might take a taxi („Wissenschaftspark Albert Einstein, Telegrafenberg, Potsdam“). In addition, we will organise a bus shuttle that will pick you up at the station Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and bring you to the venue. Alternatively, the walking distance is 15 minutes.

Conference Schedule and Format

The programme is available for download from the conference website. The registration desk will open on Friday, 2nd December at 8.00 am. The conference begins at 9.00 am and will end on Saturday, 3rd December at 7.00 pm. We will have both plenary and panel sessions. Most panels will consist of three presentations, followed by a discussion.
 

Submission of Completed Papers and Proceedings

Full papers are expected by 15 November 2005. Please see our call for papers for more details.
 

Registration Fee

Paper presenters and other participants are asked to contribute a registration fee of 120 Euros (50 Euros for students with valid student ID) upon registration. Registration fees can be paid either in advance or at the conference desk (for this case we have to charge an administrative fee of 30€), as indicated in the registration form. In order to assist our planning in preparing the conference, it would be appreciated if participants registered by fax as early as possible.
 

Visa

For a formal invitation letter for visa purposes, please contact us at BC2005@zedat.fu-berlin.de. We are unable to reimburse expenses for travel, accommodation, health insurances or visa fees.
 

Financial Support

We are currently making all efforts to generate additional funds to reimburse the travel costs of some paper presenters, especially colleagues from developing countries and/or colleagues in the earlier stages of their career. If more funding becomes available, we will provide information on the procedure for funding applications on this website, as well as per email to the participants.
 

The Weather in Potsdam

Temperatures are rather low in December, quite often as low as between 0°C and 5°C (between 32°F and 41°F). Snowfall in early December is quite unlikely, but still a possibility. Rain, however, is not uncommon.
