Sheila Jasanoff
is Professor of Science and Public Policy at Harvard University's
John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her research centers on the
role of science and technology in the authority structures of modern
democratic societies, with a particular focus on the use of science
in legal and political decisionmaking. She has published widely
on environmental regulation in the US, Europe, and India. In recent
work, she has examined
the normative implications of science and technology in global environmental
policy. Among her current projects is an edited volume of essays
looking at conflicts between local and global knowledge systems
in environment and development policy.

Peter H. Sand
Lecturer in international environmental law at the University of
Munich, and adjunct professor of law, Duke University. Formerly
associate professor, McGill University Montreal; visiting professor
at the universities of Addis Ababa, Geneva and Paris; and from 1970-1994,
legal adviser to international organizations involved in the negotiation
and administration of global and regional environmental agreements
(FAO, IUCN, UNEP, UN/ECE, UNCED, World Bank). Ca. 80 publications
on environmental law and policy; member of the scientific steering
committee of Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change,
an inter-disciplinary project of the Institutional Dimensions Programme
on Global Environmental Change (IHDP).
