What is the Gossamer Project?

The Gossamer Project is a group of specialty archives which, combined, contain the vast majority of X-Files fan fiction on the Internet. Any story which the author has given Gossamer permission to archive (either directly or by giving general permission to everyone) will be archived at Gossamer. This site is not associated with 20th Century Fox Studios, and no copyright infringement is intended.

Presently, fan fiction submitted directly and posted to the alt.tv.x-files.creative news group and X-Files-Fanfic mailing list is submitted to Gossamer. Please put DO NOT ARCHIVE in the first few lines of each and every part if you do not want the story archived.

Authors retain the copyright to their stories. By submitting fiction to this archive, authors are granting The Gossamer Project the non-exclusive right to display their fiction on this and associated web sites. Authors may request removal or revision of their own fiction (by submitting a revision), but there may be up to a sixty day delay to process these requests.

The original Gossamer archive was founded by Vincent Juodvalkis in the spring of 1995. The Gossamer Project was formed to continue his work when he decided to close that archive in the spring of 1996. For more details of Gossamer's past, take a look at our historical timeline.

How Many Stories are on the Archive?

As of March 1, 2007, the database for the complete story archives contains 35,100 entries of which 33,758 are unique story entries. The rest are duplicates required to generate the proper Author Listings for stories with multiple authors. The total size of the stories in plain text format is just over 1 gigabyte (GB). The total size of the generated HTML is 71 megabytes (MB). Over the past twelve years, roughly 1,300 stories (4%) have been removed from the archive for various reasons.

How Much Traffic does Gossamer get?

Web site traffic is generally measured in "transfer" and "hits." Transfer is the total amount of data sent from the site to its users over a given period of time, usually a month. As of January 1, 2004, the average monthly transfer for the complete story archives fluctuates between 20 and 25 gigabytes (GB) of story data. Hits is the total number of accesses to the site over a given period of time, usually a day for high-traffic sites or a month for low-traffic sites. When Gossamer was listed in the May, 1998 issue of the Yahoo! print magazine, traffic at each of the sites jumped to 60,000 hits per day--one access every 1.44 seconds when averaged over the day. Since that peak, traffic has settled into an average of 6,000 to 8,000 hits per normal day or 15,000 to 20,000 hits the first few days after an update. Note that we do not count the story indexes, other web pages, or data coming from the user to the web site when calculating transfer and hit numbers. We only count the stories themselves.

How Often are the Archives Updated?

The complete story archives are updated as a group as frequently as possible. A realistic expectation is every 60 days. We make our best efforts to perform updates more often, but an update should not be considered "overdue" unless it has been at least 60 days since the last one. The anticipated date of the next update is posted on the front page of the site. We try to keep this information as accurate as possible, but it is still only an estimate.

The Update Archive and Specialty Archive are maintained independently of the complete story archives. As such, they are updated at the discretion of the individual archivist who maintains them.

If you would like to be notified when an update is posted to the archives or when there is major Gossamer news to report, we recommend joining the Gossamer Announcements Mailing List.
