Strictly speaking, there is no simple answer to the question of how
many entries the Pentaglot comprises. Counting all lemma sets yields
a total of 18671 entries on a total of 4973 pages, but this number
reflects only the gross count of lemma tupels. The basic structure
of a lemma tupel is {Manju:Tibetan:Mongolian:Uighur:Chinese}
.
However, already the Mongolian entry of column 4 (or entry 104.4)
shows how synonyms are introduced via the construction A, basa B
kämämüi. Counting these synonyms as entries in their own right
increases the total of entries by 832, resulting in at least 19503
entries. The number of tupels should again be increased for each
Tibetan synonym. Chinese, on the other hand, has less than 18671
entries since it frequently uses phrases like hanyu tongshang,
hanyu yi tongshang or hanyu tongshang lianyong in order to
point to the preceding entry. There are exactly 526 references of
this kind, reducing the Chinese total of distinct entries to 18145.
A list of 18145 Chinese lemmata thus must match a list of 19503
Mongolian lemmata, and vice versa. Alphabetical listings of index
entries have to take this mismatch into account.
