Abstract Low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that intramolecular dynamics is an active pathway for molecular recognition. The shape of azobenzene rotamers on the surface changes through intramolecular rotation with increasing temperature and coverage, thus giving rise to the formation of ordered domains with very different structures (see picture).
