In this section on geostatistics we are going to work with the following spatial data sets:
Lake bathymetry and chemical sediment data of Lake Rangsdorf: Lake Rangsdorf is located south of Berlin, at the southern margin of the Teltow Plateau and a former proglacial drainage system known as the “Rangsdorf-Thyrow-Abflussbahn”. It is an eutrophic to hypertrophic lake suffering from severe algal blooms during the summer season. The bathymetry and chemical sediment data were collected during a field campaign in 2017.
Weather station data: We use annual weather
data, primarily temperature and rainfall, to demonstrate different
interpolation methods. The data is provided by Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) (German Weather
Service) and are accessible through the DWD data portal. In particular, we show how to
download weather data from the DWD directly within an R session by using
the rdwd
package.
SRTM digital elevation model (DEM) for Germany. The data was retrieved from OPENDEM on November 12, 2022.
