The analysis of point patterns focuses on the spatial distribution of observed events and makes inference about the underlying process that generated them. In particular, there are two main issues of interest (Bivand et al. 2008):

• The distribution of events in space (also denoted as first-order property) measured by the intensity of the point pattern, and
• the existence of possible interactions between events (also denoted as second-order property) measured by the tendency of events to appear clustered, independently or regularly-spaced.
