Reinhold Leinfelder's Contribution to Teaching Key Qualifications

A geology/palaeontology diploma university course or a geoscience bachelor or master university course is by itself a good means to develop and practise key qualifications:

  • couses are personal, and frequent occasions for oral discussion with lecturers are possibly more normal than in many other courses

  • many modern lecture books are only available in english, helping in the practise of this key language

  • field excursions and courses, including many trips to foreign countries, help develop practise in foreign languages, contacts with other cultures and unconventional solutions to possible logistic or other problems

  • individual field practical courses, including field work for diploma or bachelor theses brings you into contact with various authorities, frequently demands on-the-spot solutions and decisions and enlarges your angle of view in various ways.

Apart from this I try to contribute to improving key qualifications for students in the following ways:

  • high focus on methological teaching, which hopefully helps in enlarging the field for potential jobs
  • high focus on environmental issues, in particular on the Anthropocene
  • teaching lecturing skills and use of modern technologies in seminars
  • providing material and "post-lecture" training through inter- and intranet
  • special course on "multimedia techniques for presenting geoscience contents" (till 2004)
  • online course (in German) on multimedia techniques, with focus on geoscience applications (www.palaeo.de/multimediakurs) (stalled)
  • participation in the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)
  • New methods for communicating complex interdisciplinary science issues (incl. visualisations, knowledge comics, real labs, design thinking methods, etc.
  • contributing to interdisciplinary summer courses and special transdisciplinary courses (e.g. Global Environment Summer Academy (Univ. Bern), Anthropocene Curriculum Seminar (Haus der Kulturen der Welt), Anthropocene Summer School (Berlin, Excellenz Cluster Bild Wissen Gestaltung) etc.
