Unravelling physics of geological processes from microscopic observations and chemistry of minerals and rocks
To analyze textures in rocks sampled in the field I like to use petrography, SEM, and EMPA to quantify the mineral-chemistry. For calculations on mass balance, and for phase diagram calculation XRF whole rock chemistry belongs to the common approaches. To derive P-T conditions and if possible the P-T path from mineral chemistry zoning I use the mineral compositions along profiles or X-ray maps.
