{"id":1007,"date":"2009-08-02T23:41:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-02T23:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/~frers\/cgi-bin\/blosxom.cgi\/edv\/090802-internet_explorer_9.html"},"modified":"2010-01-23T02:46:47","modified_gmt":"2010-01-23T01:46:47","slug":"bye-bye-internet-explorer-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/frers\/blog\/?p=1007","title":{"rendered":"Bye bye, Internet Explorer 6."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/~frers\/blosxom\/data\/internet-explorer-8.png\" width=\"424\" height=\"335\" alt=\"pie chart displaying browser distribution\" style=\"border:1px solid black; margin-right:4px\" \/>Well, it is more than five years ago that I blogged about the fading away of <a href=\"http:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/~frers\/cgi-bin\/blosxom.cgi\/2004\/02\/25#040225\" title=\"check out the blog entry from February 2004\">people using Netscape Navigator 4.x versions<\/a> to visit my website, a year later about the reduction in people <a href=\"http:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/~frers\/cgi-bin\/blosxom.cgi\/2005\/05\/26#050526-browser_share\" title=\"check out the blog entry from May 2005\">browsing my site with Internet Explorer 5.x<\/a> and about the <a href=\"http:\/\/userpage.fu-berlin.de\/~frers\/cgi-bin\/blosxom.cgi\/2005\/09\/29#050928-internet_explorer_7\" title=\"check out the blog entry from September 2005\">first sightings of Internet Explorer 7<\/a>.<br \/>\nToday things are different, and Microsoft\u2019s Internet Explorer 6.x is the beast that keeps me from implementing cleaner <abbr title=\"HyperText Markup Language\">HTML<\/abbr> code for this website. But there are good news: In the last months, the number of people visiting this site with Internet Explorer 6.x has more and more often been smaller than the number of users browsing the web with the current 8.x incarnation of the beast. This is good news, because the new version 8.x is much more standards compliant and it finally, finally supports the use of the quote tag &lt;q&gt;. That means that more people will acutally see the quotation marks around the quotes (\u201c\u201d for English, \u201e\u201c for German) that I coded into this blog and the other pages offered here.<br \/>\nWhen the amount of <abbr title=\"Internet Explorer\">IE<\/abbr> 6.x users consistently remains below three percent, I will kick out the hacks that I put into the code to work around IE 6.x\u2019s annoyances. Maybe that will also be the day when I will introduce the first pages that are coded in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HTML_5\" title=\"Wikipedia entry for the new version of HTML\">HTML 5<\/a>, something that I am really looking forward to because the new &lt;video&gt; element will make embedding video in a standards conformant way <em>much<\/em> easier.<br style=\"clear:both\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it is more than five years ago that I blogged about the fading away of people using Netscape Navigator 4.x versions to visit my website, a year later about the reduction in people browsing my site with Internet Explorer 5.x and about the first sightings of Internet Explorer 7.
