» Connects your Nikon F90X/N90S to your Psion S5 «

I'm proud to announce "NiKom S5" and to release the first snapshot:

Current version 0.5c - 06-Aug-99

NiKom S5 will allow you to control your Nikon F90X/N90S camera using your Psion S5. This includes the following features:

Current Workflow

08-Aug-99
Things are going pretty well at the moment. I nearly finished the implementation for the F100, even before the F90X was finished. I can download shooting-data from the camera and store them in a database.

A GUI to display the data, allow to add comments, to select records etc is currently under development. As soon as this is finished, I'll switch back to the F90X implementation.

(The reason why I focused on the F100 is, because the camera can only store ~30 Rolls of data and as I'm traveling to Alaska this summer I might take more rolls than the camera can store, so I need a way to download the data in the fields).

06-Jun-99
Today I decided to publish the first snapshot-version of NiKom S5. This is only a very early version - this is NOT a beta-version.
I would like to see if you play around with and tell me any problems that occur and also tell me what you think has to be in the beta/final release.

Simply download the file nikom04a.zip and install it to C:\SYSTEM\APPS\NiKomS5. After this click on the tiny little camera in the extrabar to run NiKomS5.

25-Feb-99
It has been a bit quite about NiKom S5 - but I promise you, I'm still working on it. I have to implement the current camera settings (exposure mode, expuse compensation etc) and allow to load and save the current options. As soon as this is finished I'll publish the first beta...but there will be no download of data and no Nikon N90 support in the first beta.

01-Dec-98
I started to implement the Camera Option Popup-Menues and the logic behind the scenes. Half of the menues (the easy ones) are already working.

26-Nov-98
Currently all communications routines are implemented, reading the "Camera Status" and updating works well, direct Camera Controls work. All Option Menus are programmed and need to be linked into the application. Downloading the Film Data works theoreticly, but I didn't start to write any OPL-Code.

FAQ

When will NiKom S5 be released?
I can't tell you anything about this at the moment, because I never know if I can make this date. As soon as the software is release I'll sent email to all people showing interest over the last year and also announce it on 5alive.

What kind of hardware do I need?
What I have is the Nikon MC-31 Cable - unfortunitely this cable is only sold with the DataView/PhotoSecretary Software, so you'll spend more than hundert bucks an a software you didn't want to use...but there is an alternative: Cocoon-Creations HarTALK Interface. I had no chance to test the interface yet, but I'm pretty sure, that there will be no problems.

If you order a cable from them, please tell them that you want to use it with the Psion S5...just to let them know that there is another market.

Can I build a cable myself?
I took a MC-30 remote release, cut off the switch and installed a Mini-Din Connector to it. I can now use the remote release but also plug this to a little box which contains the electronical parts to adapt the camera to a serial-port.

I'm sorry, but I will not be able to build/modify a cable for you.

Will there be a Version for the F100?
Yes, for sure...the F100 implementation is nearly finished now. The protocol between camera and computer is completly new, but once you figure out how it works, it easier compared to the F90X.

So NiKom S5 will be the first 3-rd party application which offers full support for the F100.

Will there be a Version for the F5?
Not in the near future. Why? I didn't have a F5! If someone who has a F5 likes to support me and borrow me his camera for one or two weeks...

I might try to rent a F5 for a week or so, but as they charge 300 DM/Week and I didn't really need a implementation for myself this not an option at the moment.

Will NiKom S5 be Freeware or Shareware?
I've not decided yet - it really depend on how much work I'll spend on the final version.

Maybe I should release it as shareware, buy a F5 from the money and implement the camera.
