On Tuesday, September 8th, 1998, at about 8 am., the police raided several homes in Geneva. Six people were taken into police custody for several hours, one person was escorted to the airport by the police, one was held by the police for eight hours, the rest were released after about 5 hours. All were held for questioning, about the PGA, about PGA's role in the riots in May and in preventing these riots. One person in Geneva came back from being away, to find the lock on his house changed, and the house had been searched by the police.
The police also raided the office of "Institut Argent et Societe" (IAS), which served as a press office of Peoples' Global Action (PGA) in May 1998. Each house, and the IAS office were raided more or less simultaneously by about 6-8 police officers at each place. Seven computers, over 100 diskettes, many adress books, and a very large amount of documentation have been confiscated.
Peoples' Global Action co-ordinated international protests in about 35 cities in different countries on all five continents, for example in Montreal, Brasilia, Birmingham, Prague, Hyderabad, Sydney, Berlin, etc.
PGA is not an organisation, does not have a membership or a single secretariat, therefore it is not led by a handful of people in Geneva. PGA is a network of struggles in different counries co-ordinated by a committee of convenors from five continents.
The police seem very scared, and becoming agressive after an announcement that there will be protests against the Geneva Business Dialogue on September 23rd/24th 1998. The Geneva Business Dialogue is organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) as a meeting with UN-Secretary General Kofi Anaan and other officials from the United Nations.
It is also apparent that the police are making every effort to criminalise the PGA outright, since they are curtailing the basic rights of freedom to organise, and free speech.
Only a few weeks ago, at the end of August, the police raided a seminar held by friends of PGA on the premises of a squat in the noble village of Cologny, just outside Geneva. All 50 participants were taken to the police station, their tents and the squat were searched for no apparent reason, just detained for debate.

6 personas fueron tomados bajo arresto el martes 8 de septiembre 1998 a las 8 de manana. En cada residencia y en la oficina del IAS, antes la oficina de prensa de la Accion Global de los Pueblos (AGP) en Mayo 1998, se realizaron allanamientos casi simultáneamente por parte de 6 a 8 policias en cada accion.
A todos los detuvieron para interrogarles por la AGP, por el papel que desempenaron en las revueltas callejeras de mayo asi como por el rol de la AGP en la prevencion de dichas revueltas. A una persona la "escoltaron" al aeropuerto y a los demas los dejaron en libertad despues de unas cinco horas, salvo una persona que estuvo mas de 8 horas detenida.
Mas grave aun, confiscaron 7 computadoras, mas de 100 diskettes y numerosas agendas de direcciones, junto a una gran cantidad de documentos.
Dado que estos hechos suceden pocos dias antes del Geneva Bussines Dialogue del 23/24 de septiembre (Dialogo de las empresas en Ginebra, auspiciado por la Camara Internacional de Comercio),parece ser que las autoridades estan muy nerviosas por lo que podria suceder con relacion a este evento.
Ya en Agosto fueron arrestadas 50 personas durante el seminario sobre "globalizacion y resistencia" tambien en esta ciudad.
La AGP no es una organizacion, es un red de luchas y acciones. No tiene miembros y no posee un secretariado central.

Am Dienstag, den 9. September 1998 um acht Uhr morgens kam es in Genf zu Hausdurchsuchungen. Betroffen waren SympathisantInnen von Peoples Global Action (PGA), der weltweiten Aktion gegen den "Frei"handel und die Welthandelsorganisation (WTO).
Peoples' Global Action hatte im Mai dieses Jahres waehrend der WTO-Konferenz in Genf internationale Proteste koordiniert, die in etwa 35 Staedten in verschiedenen Laendern auf allen fuenf Kontinenten stattfanden, beispielsweise in Montreal, Brasilia, Birmingham, Prag, Hyderabad, Sydney, usw.
Sechs Personen wurden in Polizeigewahrsam gebracht, fuenf von ihnen wurden etwa fuenf Stunden festgehalten, der eine erst nach acht Stunden freigelassen. Einer wurde anschliessend zum Flughafen eskortiert. Die AktivistInnen wurden ueber PGA verhoert, ueber die Rolle von PGA bei den Krawallen im Mai 1998 in Genf und bei der Verhinderung derselben. Auch das Buero des Institut Argent et Societe (IAS), das im Mai 1998waehrend den Aktionen gegen die Welthandelsorganisation (WTO)als Pressebuero von PGA diente, wurde durchsucht. Die Polizei beschlagnahmte sieben Computer, ueber 100 Disketten, mehrere Adressbuecher sowie eine riesige Menge an Dokumentationsmaterial.
Erst Ende August war es in Genf bereits zu einer polizeilichen Razzia gegen PGA-SympathisantInnen gekommen. Die Polizei hielt 50 TeilnehmerInnen eines Seminars zum Thema "Globalisierung und Widerstand" fest, durchsuchte deren Zelte sowie ein besetztes Haus in Cologny, einem Vorort von Genf.
Die Genfer Polizei scheint sehr aengstlich zu sein, angesichts einer Ankuendigung von Protesten gegen den "Geneva Business Dialogue" am 23./24. September 1998, einem Dialog zwischen Konzernen wie Nestle und dem UNO-Generalsekretaer Kofi Anaan sowie weiteren UNO-Funktionaeren, der von der Internationalen Handelskammer organisiert wird.
Die Polizei versucht offenbar, jegliche Ansaetze von PGA von vorneherein zu kriminalisieren. PGA ist jedoch keine Organisation mit Mitgliedschaft, hat kein Zentralsekretariat sondern ist ein Netzwerk von Kämpfen und Aktionen in verschiedenen Laendern. Das Koordinierungskomitee von PGA besteht aus Delegierten aus fuenf Kontinenten.

La represion y censura en Ginebra nos debe llevar a, por lo menos, actuar y expresarnos aun mas.
Desde Nicaragua proponemos denunciar local y gremialmente la represion contra los que rechazamos la globalizacion impuesta. Al menos algunos centenares de Organizaciones estamos dispuestas a patentizar nuestra solidaridad con los amigos victimas de la censura y la violación de sus elementales derechos.
En el Marco de la AGP y su Manifiesto, queremos coordinar acciones que les demuestren al Geneva Bussines Dialogue (Dialogo de las empresas en Ginebra, auspiciado por la Camara Internacional de Comercio) que la represion solo nos fortalece.
