Discord
During the pandemic, some of our courses used Discord for live streaming seminars and video conferencing.
Full setup
Video: Quick start
- Download here and install. The app is available on all major desktop and mobile operating systems.
- Set up an account and verify it with your email address.
- Enter server via the invite link provided by your instructor.
- (optional) Test and adjust your microphone and webcam in the settings.1)
- Join the correct voice channel or stream
You can adjust your nickname after you registered. We recommend picking a nickname of your choice to register and a clearly identifiable one inside the server. You are free to use a pseudonym, but in that case you might want to let your instructor know about it.
Minimal setup
If you're concerned with internet privacy and data security, or if you are not on your usual computer, you can use Discord without installing the software and/or without registering. Just join from within your web browser and decline all prompts that ask you to register or download.
Note: The usability in some browsers is restricted.2)
- Chromium-based webbrowsers3) with the exception of Microsoft Edge work without restrictions.
- Firefox and Edge users cannot join a livestream. The same is true for any mobile browser.
- Browsers also vary with respect to microphone and video permissions. You might not be prompted and have to manually activate your microphone and/or webcam in the browser settings.
Cisco Webex
Cisco Webex is currently the default platform for audio/video conferencing used by the Freie Universität. See here for more information (in German).
