This light pollution map of Berlin was produced from 2647 aerial photos taken in 14 tracks across the city, on the night of September 11, 2010, between 8:40 and 11:20pm.

Night time aerial photography requires the use of very sensitive cameras. These photos were taken using a Finger Lakes Instrumentation Microline Camera with a KAI 4022 chip and a Sigma 24mm F1.8 lens. The exposure time for each image was 40ms.

This work was produced as a part of the Verlust der Nacht and MILIEU projects, which were funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF-033L038A) and by the Freie Universität Berlin respectively.

Note that in order to improve the image quality, the pixel brightnesses have been scaled non-linearly and some striping caused by overexposure has been removed with photo editing software.
