He could tell Scully was pissed at him, it wasn't very hard
to anyway. Her jaw was set and she was not speaking to him
much. He understood her concern, but he hoped she would
understand his.

After getting Mulder back from the base, and not wanting
to raise any red flags by taking him to a hospital, Scully
wanted to return straight to the motel and check him out.
He was slightly disoriented and kept complaining of a headache.
Unfortunately, Mulder had other plans. He wanted to check
on Colonel Budahas and he had a few questions for him,
Scully was livid as soon as he mentioned it, but finally
relented. It hadn't gone as planned, Colonel Budahas' wife
hadn't wanted anything else to do with them and sent
them off quickly.

Back in the motel, Scully was still mad but lost no time
in taking Mulder to her room to make sure he was okay,
although his headache was still bothering him. She made
him sit on her bed and checked his pupils. They were
somewhat dilated, his skin looked pasty and was cold
and clammy. He also seemed severely dehydrated.

Scully went to her purse and returned with some
Tylenol for his head, hoping it would do the trick and
he wouldn't need something mayor. She also wanted to make
sure he drank a fair amount of water with them.

"Mulder, here, take these. They will help with the
headache". She explained. He didn't reply, he kept
staring down the carpet and seemed miles away.

"Mulder? Mul... can you hear me?"

Nothing. She placed her hand on his chin and raised
his head to hers.

"MULDER!"

That made him snap out of it.

"Huh? What? What's wrong, Scully?" His voice was
barely above a whisper.

"What's wrong? I've been calling your name over
and over, but you seemed miles away. Are you okay?"

"Huh? Yeah, sorry. I was just thinking..."

When he didn't explain further, Scully pushed.

"About?"

Mulder just shook his head.

"Never mind". He replied softly.

That calmed her... at least for now.

"Okay, I want you to take these two pills. They
will help with you headache. I also want you to
drink plenty of water with them..."

She gave him a near full water bottle that was
sitting on her dresser. He seemed more alert.

"But don't over do it, just in case. I'm going to,
um, I'm gonna run you a bath. It will help to
increase your body temperature... or, um, do you
think you can manage a shower?"

Mulder looked at her then, a small smile on his face.

"I might need a hand either way". He replied winking at her.

"Ha-ha". Scully replied. "So you're not as bad as
I thought. Go take your shower; I'll look for a
change of clothes in your room"

He just stared at her.

"Mulder?"

"Yeah?"

"GO!" She ordered him, thought she didn't want
to seem bossy; she was still worried about him.
Scully approached the door to go outside and to his room.

"Okay, okay... Mom". Mulder answered with a small
smile on his face while making his way to the bathroom.

She glared back at him before exiting the room,
but was trying hard to suppress a smile. Scully
quickly went to Mulder's room, surprised to find
the door open and more surprised that she hadn't
thought about asking him for his key. The first
thing she noticed was his half empty suitcase
sitting on the floor, he hadn't even bothered to
unpack everything. She looked through it and
quickly found and grabbed a pair of sweatpants,
a t-shirt, sweater, underwear and just as quickly
she left his room and went right back into hers.
Upon entering, the first thing she heard was the
shower being cut off. Scully laid his clothes on
the bed for him and then noticed his underwear.
She hadn't thought much of it when she first took
it from his suitcase, after growing up with two
messy brothers, seeing male underwear wasn't something
that surprised her or provoked any other feelings.
However, she found herself thinking that these were
Mulder's boxers, the boxers of the man who was
currently naked, taking a shower in her motel
bathroom... very naked. Scully felt slightly
embarrassed and could also feel her cheeks
reddening at the thought. She quickly busied
herself looking for a change of clothes to
wear after her own shower.

Mulder got out of the bathroom just a couple of
minutes later, feeling like a new man. He was
still a little dizzy but almost back to normal, almost.
There was something that was still nagging at
him. Scully was rummaging thought what he thought
was her own suitcase, looking for cloths for
herself, he assumed. His were lying neatly
at the bottom of her bed.

"How are you feeling?" Scully asked still feeling
flushed. "I got you some simple clothes, but I
couldn't find any socks, your bag..." She finally
raised her head to look at him and stopped cold.
He was standing just outside the bathroom's door
with nothing but a towel wrapped around his hips...
wrapped very low around his hips. Scully was
surprised at having to fight to repress a moan.

"Thanks, Scully". Mulder replied, simply nodding his head.

"No problem. I'm going to grab a shower myself; there should be
enough water left". She said jokingly.

"Yeah, sure" Mulder replied absentmindedly, slowly
sitting on the bed and looking out the window.

Scully became worried again.

"Are you sure you're okay? Maybe I should really
take you to a hospital; God knows what they did to you."

He didn't reply, her worry increased.

"What's wrong, Mulder? You know you can talk to me"

"I know, I know" he replied slowly. "I was just,
eh, I was just thinking, Scully. This thing, whatever
they did, it reminded me so much of that time with Samantha".

She really looked at him then, all lustful thought
flying out of her mind. She sat down next to him on
the bed and cautiously asked him:

"What do you mean, Mulder? How is it like Samantha?"

He shook his head before speaking.

"I don't remember anything, Scully. Nothing at all
from that night just like I can't remember what happened
after our pleasant meeting with out MIB friends"

She edged closer to him.

"It's shock Mulder, I'm sure it'll come back to you.
Maybe gradually, but it will." She put her hand on
his shoulder. "You need to rest now, don't think
about it. Please, just get some rest."

His head had been shaking from side to side while she spoke.

"No, no, no Scully. You don't understand!
It's almost the same situation".

The volume of his voice had been increasing more and more.

"Mulder, please" Scully pleaded, trying to calm him.
"It won't do you any better to dwell on it right now".

"No Scully. Don't you see? I can't remember
anything... again. They've manipulated me again;
they've manipulated... my mind, Scully.
My mind and my memories, once again".

Mulder was restless, still sitting next to her, but his
voice was perturbed and was almost shouting.

"Mulder. Mulder! Look at me. We don't know what
happened there and we might never know. But it's done
Mulder, they buried it... it's done and we need
to get out of here as soon as possible."

Mulder just stared at her, incredulous.

"Scully, you don't un..."

"No, I don't understand Mulder" she interrupted him.
"You knew this was dangerous and kept it from me.
And I almost lost you today, I didn't know how to reach
you, Mulder, and it was one of the scariest things
I ever faced. We were being watched the whole time, Mulder.
As you said, I can see we were close to something,
I don't know what was it, but it could have ended badly.
I wish you would understand that".

Now Mulder was the one that edged closer to her.

"I'm here now Scully. I'm okay... really. I just, I don't know."

"Yes you are Mulder. You are here but that was a really
stupid thing to do and I'm still mad at you for ditching
me like that, but even more for putting yourself at risk...
dammit, Mulder I had to hold a man at gunpoint to get you
back. And I'm sure he wasn't a reporter."

He came even closer to her.

"I'm sorry I ditched you, Scully. I didn't want to put
your career on the line for me, especially when
you didn't agree."

"That's not it Mulder, and it's not enough. I'm supposed
to be there to watch your back, even if I see things
differently or not, but I can't do that if you run off
and I have no idea where you're going. We're partners, Mulder.
Partners." She stressed the word for emphasis.

Scully took a deep breath, and they just stared at each other.

"I know we are" said Mulder "You have showed me how valuable
you are to the investigations in such a short time. I guess
I owe you more than this."

"I just needed you to know that." Mulder nodded,
understanding, but she continued. "I believe my job was and
is already on the line. I know this isn't a simple assignment
and I'm as deep in it as much as you".

He just looked at her; they stared at each other for
what seemed like minutes. He smiled then.

"Thanks for saving my ass, Scully."

Scully laughed, breaking the tense mood.

"You're most welcome Mulder. But I have a feeling this won't be
the last time."

It was his turn to laugh.

"Yes, I think you're probably right." He placed his hand on her
leg and gently patted it. They both stared at it and then at each
other. The air grew heavy. They were almost nose to nose, feeling
each other's breath on their faces.

Scully broke the spell first, leaning in slowly and bringing her
lips to his for a short and sweet kiss. She pulled back and could
see a smile tugging at his lips, she found herself smiling too.
Mulder caressed her cheek with one hand and brought the other to
the back of her head, pulling her to him to taste her lips again.
He kissed her softly, little nips and caresses, until his tongue
brushed over her bottom lip in a long caress, seeking entrance.

It was Scully's turn to feel lightheaded, she clutched at his
bare shoulders as she opened her mouth. They're tongues met,
touched and played as their owners moaned.

Mulder's hands weren't idle either, one stayed on her neck,
keeping her mouth close to his as the other crept up from her
jean-clad hips, and slowly up and up to her waist and nearly
touching her right breast, when Scully suddenly pulled back,
breathless and flushed all over. She dropped her gaze to her lap.

"I'm, um, I better go take that shower now so we can get out
of here" she excused herself lamely.

"Yeah, you do that" replied Mulder noticing her hesitancy.

Yet neither moved. Their gazes fluctuated from their lips to
their eyes and back to their glistening and slightly puffed lips.
She broke the spell again, stood up, went to the dresser to grab
her clothes and headed for the bathroom.

"It would only take a few minutes" she found herself explaining.

Mulder hadn't taken his eyes from her since their kiss ended,
looking at her intently.

"Sure, okay. I'll wait, I'm in no rush".

Their gaze found each other again, his trying to see if
she caught his meaning.

She then smiled at him.

"Now that you mention it, Mulder, I'm glad to hear that,
because neither am I". Scully smiled broadly before disappearing
behind the bathroom's door.

Mulder was left alone in the room, with a new perspective
and feelings about his partner. One that, many years ago,
he didn't think he would ever feel again.
