Institution: Open University Location: UK ============================================================ Temporary Research Fellow in using the computer as a therapeutic tool with children Applications are invited to work on an ongoing project which is investigating the potential of computer software as a therapeutic tool with children. The first phase of the work included observations of children using a particular piece of computer software (which runs on an Apple Macintosh). This data has been analysed and written up and further funding has been obtained to extend this work. The successful applicant would be the key person in the project to evaluate the potential of the computer in this role. Applicants should have a good honours degree in Education or Psychology; a Ph.D. in Education, Psychology or Information Technology and experience of appropriate research methods such as quantitative or qualitative evaluation techniques, and of interviewing. A background in child therapy or clinical psychology could also be appropriate. The appointment is tenable for 14 months and is available from the 1st December or as soon as possible thereafter. Rutkowska of the Psychology Group in the School of Cognitive & Computing Sciences at the University of Sussex. This will focus on early object manipulation by infants, especially the classification and interpretation of their pre-reaching behaviours, leading to comparative work involving infants with congenital hand deformity in collaboration with the Bond-McIndoe Centre for Medical Research, Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. A background in studying infants and/or perceptual-motor abilities would be an advantage. The position involves the management of a research project on psychological aggression in marriage that is grounded in research on social cognition and in research on marital dysfunction. Data collection involves laboratory assessments of marital functioning and a longitudinal component that involves tracking couples over a 12 month period. This is a 3-year, fixed term position. The person assuming this post will work closely with the grant holder in implementing the project, analyzing the data, and preparing manuscripts for publication. Good interpersonal skills are required for the recruitment, running, and management of participants. Although not essential, familiarity with the use of PCs in data collection, programming skills, and expertise in data analysis would be an advantage.
