SECTION C: FORUM UPDATE SECTION

--------------------------------------------------------
Note: This section describes the latest news on Internet
      forums for psychologists, psychiatrists and
      related disciplines -- mostly email discussion
      lists. The Forum Update Section has been a regular
      feature of the InterPsych Newsleter, and it has
      now been revived in the PsychNews International.
      Although this first installment lists InterPsych (IP)
      resources, the forum update section is by no means
      restricted to IP news!

      Submit all contributions or corrections for the
      Forum Update section to the PsychNews Int'l mailbox:
      psychnews@psychologie.de
      Submissions may be edited both for length,
      redundancies, and comprehension.

If you miss section parts, you must access our

1.   INTRODUCTION
==========================================

-Martin Briscoe

Interpsych has developed a new web site in recent months
http://www.interpsych.org/

Interpsych, the brainchild of Ian Pitchford from the UK,
started out as a single discussion list in the early 90s.
Interpsych's aim was to encourage the interchange of ideas
between mental health professionals. Ian gradually built up
the number of lists, each one devoted to a particular area of
mental health.

As the number of members increased the leaders of each
discussion group formed an administration team who were
responsible for developing Interpsych's bylaws. In 1998
Interpsych purchased its own Internet domain
name, www.interpsych.org/

The web site contains the latest information about their
discussion lists and affiliated web sites.

Information about the lists and how to join can be found at:
http://www.interpsych.org/inter.htm

==========================================
3.   FEATURED FORUM: TRAUMATIC-STRESS
==========================================

-Anne Dietrich and Martin Briscoe

TRAUMATIC STRESS (T-S) was established in April,
1994. It was the first list established after InterPsych's
flagship list, Psychiatry-l, was established by Ian
Pitchford in February, 1994. The T-S Forum focuses on
all matters of interest to the emerging field of
Traumatology, which is the study, treatment, and
reporting of information about the immediate and
long-term psychosocial, and psychobiological
consequences of highly stressful events and circumstances.
Forum members are researchers, practitioners, reporters,
policy makers, students, professors, and others who are
interested in contributing to the field.

The forum continues to address various issues associated
with the assessment, study, and treatment of people affected
by traumatic events. Topics recently discussed include, but
are not limited to, research design in the study of PTSD;
ethical guidelines; alternative approaches to the treatment of
PTSD; the biology of PTSD; competency, training, and
licensure issues; therapist responses to trauma work;
assessment and diagnosis of PTSD and related
disorders; litigation issues; retraumatization of clients; and
the history of trauma in the mental health field.

The forum maintains a subscriber base of approximately 600
members. The vast majority of the active membership is
respectful and tolerant of the views of others, with ideas and
information responsibly shared between members of the
forum. Because there is no filtering or screening of
messages and no strict standards for membership, the forum
is a lively arena for professional and lay discourse, alike.

The activity level of the list tends to alternate, with periods
of little activity interspersed with periods of flurries of
activity. Lively, heated debates sometimes occur during
active times. Although there are occasions when the
viewpoints of others are responded to with impatience and
lack of tolerance, the membership is most often
self-reflective, self-correcting, and considerate of the diverse
perspectives of others.

The heterogenous nature of the membership results in the
exchange of creative ideas and assists professionals in
maintaining a cutting edge in regards to innovations in
trauma treatment, research, theory, and understanding the
experiences of the clientele we are devoted to serve.

On many occasions members announce employment
opportunities, upcoming conferences and training
opportunities. For example, the upcoming 3rd Green Cross
Projects Training Conference for Tampa, Florida (USA) in
the first week of June was announced. Members are also the
first to be alerted to the publication of the electronic journal,
TRAUMTOLOGYe .

Moreover, members of the T-S Forum and another on-line
forum recently provided information on web-based sites
containing Codes of Ethics from various mental health
organizations, Treatment Guidelines for trauma and related
disorders, and trauma-based websites. These urls are
provided for your convenience in the next section.

This table provides a breakdown of items posted to
traumatic-stress in January-February 1999:
