BLIND-DEV on LISTSERV@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
-------------------------------------------
BLIND-DEV is an unmoderated discussion list dedicated to
the detailed discussion of issues concerning the
development of computer products and adaptive equipment
for blind and visually impaired computer users. This
includes both hardware and software development on any system.
The purpose of BLIND-DEV is to serve as a catalyst which will
both spur and speed the development of software which will
enable the blind user to use emerging technologies, platforms,
operating systems, and applications as they are developed, so
that access is built-in, rather than retrofitted.

Example topics of discussion include, but are not limited to:
* design strategies
* accessibility APIs, such as MSAA
* Text-to-speech APIs, such as SSIL and SAPI
* Off-screen models (OSMs)
* Braille output APIs
* Relevant operating system issues

BLIND-DEV, therefore, is a conduit through which software
developers and users--whatever their area of interest, level
of expertise, operating system and/or hardware platform of
choice -- are able to dialogue, brainstorm, and educate one
another. While BLIND-DEV is intended as a technologically
oriented list, list "lurkers" are also welcome to monitor
this dialogue.

Blind-Issues on LISTSERV@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
----------------------------------------------
Blind-Issues. If you are in the mood for a spirited
debate, Blind-Issues can accommodate.

Many things affect the lives of the blind and visually
impaired in everyday life. With this in mind, we thought a
list which dealt with the major issues of the day would be
a welcome addition to the lists specifically designed for
the blind and visually impaired.

Topics which bog down and consume other E-mail lists are
welcome on Blind-Issues, such as:
Blind Organizations and their goals, policies, conventions
and treatment of social issues,
transportation issues specific to the blind,
discrimination shown by society toward the blind,
the general anger and frustration which may be a part of
every day life, and whatever else makes you a little hot
under the collar.

We want Blind-Issues to be a list for you to vent your
frustrations or a place to find a sympathetic ear.
If you are in the mood for a spirited debate, blind-issues
can accomodate!

----------------------------------------
This Canadian list has been established with the goal of
exchanging Canadian information and support (personal,
financial, legal, etc.) for those with Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis (also Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and
Fibromyalgia, in the hope of finding a cure for these

sufferers find themselves in.

patient groups, as well as other organizations/institutions.
Therefore, the list is open to individuals and groups who

DIDCS-L on majordomo@esosoft.com
--------------------------------
THE DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER CASE STUDIES LIST

The didcs-l list is dedicated entirely to the sharing of case
studies and clinical experiences relating to DID/MPD or severe
DD-NOS. The list is open to all licensed clinicians, registered
interns, university level instructors, as well as Ph.D. or masters
level students who are actively in practicum.

There is not enough understanding of DID/MPD within the clinical
community, let alone the general public, and this forum was created
with this in mind, to provide another way for those concerned with
and interested in dissociative disorders a way to find information to
assist them with their clients.

As there will be a wide array of experience and understanding of
DID/MPD or DD-NOS, the one important thing to remember in this forum
is that no question or point of sharing is less than anyone else's,
and it is my hope that those with more expertise in the area of
dissociative disorders will provide some direction or thoughts to those
less experienced. New ideas and opinions are always welcome, and no
one should be hesitant to share her/his ideas or thoughts, as no one
really knows where the next helpful tidbit of information will
come from.

JEWISH-PSY list on the SHAMASH Network
--------------------------------------
The purpose of this list is to provide a forum for
psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, rabbis and those in
related academic and professional fields, to discuss the relationships
between Jewish values, beliefs, practices and culture, and
psychology/psychiatry. Examples of some topics of interest are:

1) In what ways might the moral and religious teachings of
Judaism or other cultural values of Jews, enhance
psychological well-being and in what ways might they be
   detrimental to them?
2) How are therapists to deal with what they perceive to be
incompatibilities between their patients' religious beliefs
and practices and their emotional health?
3) What are the psychological assumptions embedded in Jewish
religion and culture, and how do they compare with
   contemporary psychological theories and assumptions?
4) How are therapists to deal with conflicts between their own
Jewishly related values and those of their patients on matters
   that might have therapeutic significance?
5) What are some of the psychological dimensions of cultural,
religious and political challenges being faced by Jews today
and what are appropriate responses to them?

Discussions can be about theoretical issues, clinical examples
or the relationship between theory and practice. If examples from
clinical cases are presented, confidentiality of patients should be
protected.

JEWISH-PSY is moderated by Dr. Solomon Schimmel, Professor
of Psychology and Education at Hebrew College, 43 Hawes Street,
Brookline, MA 02146. Dr. Schimmel is the author of "The Seven

Kids' Mental Health

The mission of the KMH list is to promote the positive emotional
and social development of children and teens. This goal is met
by facilitating the exchange of information between parents

they have been screened for their appropriateness to the list.
This is to reduce the number of unwanted mail received through
the list.

What to expect from KMH: You can expect an exchange of
information between parents and professionals who share a
common interest in children and teens, mental health issues,
parenting, education, counseling, behavioral and optional
issues, medications and other relevant topics. You will receive
press releases and articles that are believed to in some way
further our objectives for the list. These would include new books,
seminars, other mailing lists, websites, and so on that are

Personal Care Assistance

Personal Care Assistance is a discussion list for people
with disabilities who use the services of Personal Care Assistants
(PCAís). Locating, screening, hiring, training and maintaining a
relationship with a person who will provide personal care is a
difficult and complicated process. It can also be a rewarding
productive experience for all involved.

In the past, it has been next to impossible for people with
disabilities to communicate with each other for the purposes of
finding out methods of dealing with problems, locating resources
(financial and potential employee pools) and supporting each other
through difficult times.

This list is being offered to provide a bridge between people with
disabilities who use PCAís so that they can share their experiences,
ideas, wisdom and creative suggestions. We also want to help
disseminate the latest information on governmental legislation that
may directly effect accessibility to personal care assistance.

This list also welcomes Personal Care Assistants, caregivers,
families and friends of those who use these services.

needs from schools, sports leagues, and other social
groups or "youth serving" organizations? Are you ready to
join or form a group of parents who feel the same way?
Need some ideas to spur you on? Have some strategies to
share? Does your local group want to connect up with
other groups via the Internet? If so, join us.

We are the parents of the TAGFAM on-line community and
we've decided that it's time to join together
and take action.

TAGFORUM is for parents, educators, and other
professionals and members of the community who
are interested in providing developmentally
appropriate programs for the intellectually
gifted children in their midst. We have a
particular interest in securing changes in
current education policy and the provision
a developmentally appropriate and intellectually
challenging education FOR ALL CHILDREN INCLUDING THE

TAGFORUM will play host to challenging discussions
and debates on current issues of interest to
the TAG community:

Education & Social Policy, Practice, and Implementation
Community Issues (TAG children in sports, clubs, and
other social groups or "youth" programs)
Advocacy Efforts: local, state, regional, national

list looks inward, towards issues affecting
intellectually gifted individuals & their families,
the TAGFORUM mailing list focuses outward towards issues
affecting our communities and nations.

Our goal in creating this forum is to encourage the

Peer-reviewed papers are published that are relevant
to clinical practice, clinical applications of
research findings, teaching, and service delivery

HIPPIAS
-------
A peer-reviewed search engine for philosophy.
Hippias covers philosophy on the Internet
comprehensively, yet reduces information
overload. It includes all and only those
sites judged to be relevant to philosophy by
the Hippias editors. Unlike other search engines
without this peer-review component, it returns
very few false positives.

For example, Alta Vista returns about 40,000 hits
on "Descartes" these days, most of them irrelevant
to philosophers (for example, a software company
and a consulting service). Hippias returns
around 200 hits, each of them relevant.

I am working on a WWW based undergraduate research
paper clearinghouse. This project, sponsored by
the National Science Foundation, seeks to become
a way for students to disseminate the results of
their independent and/or class projects.

An early version is available at

I would appreciate feedback about (1) a mechanism
for submission [right now it will accept a
manuscript from anyone. Should I institute a 'faculty
sponsor' or similar mechanism] (2) suggestions for
formatting, etc (3) Interest. Do you have students
who would submit manuscripts?

BALINT on listserv@maelstrom.stjohns.edu
----------------------------------------
The BALINT list has moved to a new server.

The BALINT mailing list is a discussions on doctor-patient
relationships which adopts Michael Balint's approach to assess
the patient's condition in order to integrate the various
interactions extant between the patient, his illness, his family,
his doctor, the hospital, the doctor's office and the society at
large, mainly by means of Balint groups.

Balint groups are mainly formed by a small number of doctors
interested in improving their relationships with their patients
and coordinated by a specially trained psychiatrist. They have as
their aim to reveal feelings, unwittingly harboured by the doctor
towards his patient, usually engendered by purely subjective
motives, which interfere with the doctor's approach to his
patient; thus jeopardizing not only psychological aspects of the
patient but also blurring or blinding the doctor's mind with
regard to right diagnostic procedures and further treatment.

Therefore, Balint list welcomes contributions from medical
doctors, psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, social
workers, as well as the various auxiliary professionals with a
commitment to humanize present-day hi-tech medicine; either from a
purely academic viewpoint or as a means radically to modify
current patterns of human relationships within the definite field
of medical practice.

English-speaking students developing high levels of
proficiency in Spanish while making normal progress
in English development; both language groups
performing academically at their grade level,
developing positive attitudes toward the two
languages being learned and toward the communities
they represent, and developing a positive self-
image. It is assumed that a second language is
best learned not as the object of instruction,

HRAJ on LISTSERV@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU
--------------------------------------
Human Relations, Authority and Justice: Experiences and Critiques
This is an open, unmoderated forum designed to encourage the
application of psychoanalytic and related psychodynamic
approaches to the understanding of group, institutional,
cultural and political processes.

While attempting to be relevant to all contexts, it is
particularly focussed on the newly-emerging democracies
in Eastern Europe. The forum is related to an electronic
journal of the same name based at
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~psysc/hraj/home.html
(NB: This URL is different from the original one
and it is case sensitive.)

Most of those who are working on this project are
based in London, England and Sofia, Bulgaria and work
in the helping professions, organizational
consultancy and group relations, while some work
with ethnic minorities, crisis intervention, sexual
abuse and other applied spheres. What brings them
together is in the conviction that primitive,
unconscious, irrational processes play a much larger
part in human relations than is usually supposed and
that unless full account can be taken of these
processes and unless ways can be found to understand
and contain them the individual to international
relations.

In particular, the group has made extensive use of
the approaches to human relations developed by Wilfred
Bion and others at the Tavistock Institute of Human
Relations, summarized in his _Experiences In Groups_
(London: Tavistock, 1961) and the tradition of group
relations and organizational consultancy which has
followed on from that work in the Tavistock and
elsewhere, in particular, in group relations
conferences at Leicester and in, e.g., America,
Israel, Germany, Australia, India. Other approaches,
both psychoanalytic and systemic, are also drawn
upon, in particular, on the normal role of psychotic
anxieties in contributing to problems in groups and
institutions. Group relations events were held in
Sofia in 1992, 1996, and 1997, and there was a
founding conference of the project in 1995.

The issues addressed by the forum and journal are
central to the project of building democratic
institutions in newly-democratizing countries in
Eastern Europe, but they are obviously also relevant
to any setting where trust and co-operation are
under threat. As a result of this work, the Bulgarian
Institute of Human Relations has been established.
Its co-directors are Professor Toma Tomov, Dep. of
Psychiatry, Medical University of Sofia
(ttomov@sun.medun.acad.bg) and Professor Robert
M. Young, Centre for Psychotherapeutic Studies,
University of Sheffield (r.m.young@sheffield.ac.uk)

like other lists, this is an informational-line,
a party-line for the sharing of informed decisions
and providing expert medical opinion for doctors,
patients, and anyone else interested in chronic pain.

The PAIN forum is now unmoderated. However, it is
facilitated. But, postings now go directly to the
forum. If posting policy is breached, subscribers are
informed and if violations of the specific goals are
further violated, subscribers are deleted and filtered
from the forum. PAIN was formerly moderated and there
were delays in posting. NOW, posting is immediate.

Important: There is NO QUOTING, except to preface your
remarks [limited to 2 or 3 lines only]. All others will
be deleted...

DISCLAIMER: While the information provided in the PAIN
Forum may be considered by many here to be the best
medical opinion, it is by no means the only definitive
opinion and everyone is encouraged to seek additional
opinions and advice from other health care providers.
Please use the information found in the Pain Forum as a
useful guide but not the last word. Noone in the PAIN
Forum or at SJU can be held liable for anything you
read in the PAIN Forum and reliance on any information
found in the Pain Forum is at YOUR OWN RISK.

The subject is *CHRONIC PAIN*, including health &
healing, and politics dealing with pain policy, etc.
This is an educational forum for doctors, other
health care providers, patients, and anyone
concerned with the objectives as stipulated:

The Primary FOCUS of PAIN-L is always
CHRONIC "physical" PAIN and discussion
includes the following range of topics
and objectives.

OBJECTIVES:
Discussion of..........
[1] Strategies for healing, remissions, coping.
[2] Medical methodology for healing.
[3] Philosophical approach to pain, health & healing.
[4] *POLITICS* for dispatching health services and care.
[5] That which causes unnecessary physical pain & suffering.
[6] Discussion of public health issues

POLICY:
The highest objective of this forum should always
be to provide scientific truth.

We're here to learn. When providing technical
information or facts, provide your "resources"

worthwhile quality of life.

relationships on relationships-subscribe@joshua.rivertown.net
-------------------------------------------------------------
THE RELATIONSHIPS LIST has changed hosts and e-mail software.
It resides on the host named above using ezmlm, EZ-Mailing List Manager.

The Relationships List has been created with the goal of
sharing and exploring the problems and pleasures of the
day-to-day (as well as long-term) issues that confront
all of us who are in "bonded" emotional partnerships.
For the purposes of this list, a "relationship" is defined
as a "pairing" of two individuals in a life situation that
entails significant commitment to each other. It might be
beneficial for both members of the relationship to join
and participate on this list. However, individual members,
as well as recently "singled" people are also welcome
on this list to enable them to have a place to discuss
the circumstances of their "singling", and the impact
on the list member.

The partnership need not confine to any arbitrary societal
norm. The list is open to both heterosexual and
homosexual relationships. Heterosexual relationships
are not restricted to married couples. Emphasis on
significant commitment is the determining factor one
should use when considering joining the Relationships
list.

for editorial review.

This journal will be a publication of review articles on
issues of policy and services for children and
families. "Children's Services" will provide a forum
for discussions on service delivery, child advocacy,
and social/legal policy issues. This journal will
foster an integration of child and family development
research, clinical intervention research and evaluation,
the design, implementation, and evaluation of service delivery
systems, and information on the political process for
improving quality and accessibility of child and family

All articles will be peer reviewed and selected for their

articles.
