1. Introduction

A trip and some further research have allowed me to make a more precise --- but still incomplete - inventory of films and resources than the ones I had come across before.

I have also been able to see some very rare documentaries produced in Eastern Siberia, hardly known outside Russia, that are extremely good and that are therefore listed here. Indeed, some of them are closely linked to Mongolian history, as they deal with ethnic groups that live both in Siberia and in Mongolia.

I would like to share the information I have found by making it accessible to web users. This data can be helpful to those curious about these less accessible films.

Some of this information is missing due to the difficulty of accessing the primary sources of these films. When possible, I have listed a contact or an archive centre where the prints are available. The Mongolian films listed represent, except for the more recent ones, a very small percentage of the total production, but, since it is impossible to get a complete filmography, the present one functions as a first step towards collecting further information. When possible, I have added a short outline of the films.

This research was made possible thanks to the help and generosity of people we met along our way and back home. I am very grateful to the Lord Rootes Fund (United Kingdom) for its support of the project. And I would like to thank especially for their kind help Tsolmon Ukhna (London), Philippe Jaladeau from the Festival des Trois Continents (Nantes, France), Ulrike Ottinger (Berlin), Sarantuya Tumendemberel in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia Movies Company), Ukhna in Ulaanbaatar (Mongolian Federation of the Arts), Naoum Klejman in Moscow (Film Museum), Mr. Solongo (Mongolkino), Mr. Dmitriev (Gosfilmfond), and my two travelling companions Judith Anzures and Nicolas Espejo. I would like to add a special thank you to Matt Hogan who has accepted to spend some time correcting my written English.

I have also listed here books and stories related to images and representations of these countries.
