Introduction:

With the advent of Microsoft FS2000, it has first become possible to modify the navigational environment of the simulator without altering any scenery files provided with the simulator program. The same is true for FS2002. By adding certain personal BGL files to the collection of standard BGL files, you might create new NavAids and/or annihilate or alter existing ones. This aim can be achieved with the help of the tool <MODNAV.EXE>.

The basic idea is to build a new area within the scenery library of FS2002, give it first priority and put BGL files of your own into that area. These files annihilate an existing NavAid (of VOR-, ILS- or NDB-type) at a certain position on the earth's surface and in its immediate vicinity and either do nothing else or replace it with a NavAid of the same type but with parameters of your own, which you can freely choose. With <MODNAV> you might do this with as many different NavAids as you like, the only restriction being that you can not modify a NavAid you have already created or modified youself having used this tool. If you want to do this, you have first to delete the respective earlier file.

Installation:

1. Unzip the file <MODNAV.ZIP> which contains this README file and the file <MODNAV.EXE> into a temporary working directory.
2. Create the subdirectory < ...\FS2002\Addon Scenery\Updates\Scenery> if this directory does not already exist. Your personal BGL files will reside in this subdirectory.
3. Copy the file <SCENERY.CFG> from the main FS2002 directory into the chosen temporary working directory. Then run <MODNAV.EXE> whenever you want to delete or modify a NavAid incorporated in any of the original FS2002 scenery libraries or if you want to add a new one. When you run the tool the first time, the file <SCENERY.CFG> within the working directory will be modified by the addition of the new area "Navigational Updates", and the original <SCENERY.CFG> file will be saved under the name <SCENERY.ORG>. "Navigational Updates" will automatically gain first priority in the scenery library with the consequence that NavAids within areas with lower priority can be erased by the exclusion mechanism of FS2002 written into <SCENERY.CFG> by <MODNAV.EXE>.

Running <MODNAV.EXE> is self-explanatory. Be careful to enter the respective parameters in correct format (especially geographical positions), since the program does only check the correct formats of the inputs to a certain degree. Though FS2002 allows frequencies in the MHz area for NDBs, this feature is not implemented in <MODNAV.EXE>; you have to input NDB frequencies between 200 and 999 kHz. For VOR and ILS NavAids you have to input the Code flags:
DME available: 1
TACAN: 2
Voice available: 4
No NAV signal: 8
DME transmitter at Glideslope: 16
Back Course is not available: 32 (disabled after patch)
Glideslope available: 64
Localizer: 128
These flags can be used cumulatively.
After having run <MODNAV.EXE>, you have to copy back the (modified) file <SCENERY.CFG> from the working directory to the main FS2002 directory and the bgl file(s) created by <MODNAV.EXE> in the working directory to the FS2002 subdirectory ...\FS2002\Addon Scenery\Updates\scenery. With every run of the program, a log file (<MODNAV.LOG>) is written.

De-Installation:
If you want to de-install the program with all the NavAids you have built, you only have to delete all your BGL files from the ...\FS2002\Addon Scenery\Updates\scenery subdirectory (and you might also delete the scenery sub-subdirectory, if there is nothing else contained in it) and to copy the first version of <SCENERY.ORG> from the working to delete the <SCENERY.CFG> file from the main FS2000 directory and to rename <SCENERY.ORG> to <SCENERY.CFG>. If you want to de-install a single NavAid you have created or modified, just delete the corresponding BGL file from the ...\FS2002\Addon Scenery\Updates\scenery subdirectory and copy the latest version of <SCENERY.ORG> from your working directory as <SCENERY.CFG> to the main FS2000 directory.

Example:
Let's go through an explicite example: Assume, you want to improve the navigational situation at the airport of Funchal / Madeira by creating an ILS NavAid for the Runway 6. Then you have to go along according to the following steps:
1. Get the geographical coordinates of the begin of the runway in question. These are - as you find out locating your plane appropriately and using the information from the environment menu as N 32 41' 25" , W 16 47' 0" .The magnetic variation is -9, the altitude 65 m and the direction of Runway 06 is 57 . Hence, you have to enter as the direction of the localizer 57 - 9 = 48 degrees.
2. Now, switch to your working directory, where you have put <MODNAV.EXE>, choose "Create NavAid" in the menu and enter the necessary data. The input should look as follows:
    Type of NavAid: ILS
    Position: N32 41.61 , W16, 47.0.
    Frequency: 110.1 MHz ,
    Range: 22 nm ,
    MagVar: -9 ,
    Altitude: 65 m ,
    Localizer Direction: 48 ,
    Glideslope angle: 3 .
    Code: 193
    ID: IFUN ,
    Name: Funchal ILS .
3. Run the program, copy <SCENERY.CFG> to the main FS2002 directory and the file <N32 41_61 W16 47_0.bgl> into the ...\FS2002\Addon Scenery\Updates\scenery subdirectory. That's all, Funchal ILS should now be in existence. Unfortunately, it can not be viewed neither in the map view of the Environment menu nor in the GPS view, because only genuine NavAids are shown in these map views; nevertheless, it is there, whenever you approach Madeira.

General Remarks:
<MODNAV.EXE> is put into the public domain. It can be freely copied and downloaded by any individual. Any feed-back, whatsoever, is appreciated by the author (e-mail: gerhard@berendt.de). The author, however, rejects any liability for damages which might be caused by the use of the program.
I should like to thank Dai Griffiths, Peter Dowson and Simon Hradecky for a lot of helpful comments. Additional technical information can be found in the Microsoft SDK for FS2000/FS2002 Scenery Reference.
