Twice as many years as our ancestors: and the concept of a life plan

Keynote address by Arthur E. Imhof

Between 1740-49 and 1989, the distribution of the ages at death (in groups of five years) turned upside down. Whereas in 1740-49, relatively most deaths occured in the youngest age group (cf. bottom = 0-5 years old), in 1989 most occur in the higher and highest age groups. This fundamental change has, however, not yet reached its final position, where all people would attain the maximum average life expectancy of about 85 years.
