WHO SUPPORTED IYOR-ACTIVITIES IN GERMANY?
Activities for IYOR in Germany were initiated and coordinated by the german IYOR-Coordination Group (as a part of the german IYOR-committee), many activities were directly organised by the Coordination Group.

Others who contributed to IYOR in Germany
Direct support
An enormous number of others have supported IYOR in Germany: many other reef scientists, many university institutes, many schools and school teachers, zoos, aquariums, museums, diving organisations and sport divers, non-profit environmental organisations, private environmental consultors as well as some ministeries contributed to iyor activities in Germany. The complete list of direct supporters is in the internet.
Financial support
Among the sponsors for IYOR-Germany were the German Research Foundation (DFG), the University of Stuttgart, the Geomar Kiel, the Förderkreis Sporttauchen e.V., various companies and air lines. For a complete list of sponsors see the internet at the above address.
Not mentioned here are people, organisations and companies having sponsored ReefCheck Red Sea and ReefCheck Maldives (see below).
IYOR-Germany organised and coordinated ReefCheck Red Sea and ReefCheck Maldives. Head of this coordination was Moshira Hassan, Kiel, together with Gert Wörheide, Göttingen and Rosemarie Asang-Soergel, Neu Ulm. A detailed report on ReefCheck is not purpose of this report but will be presented elsewhere.
Besides the general public, IYOR-Germany focused on two main target groups: schools and divers. This was achieved by various categories of activities
Fairs, congresses and activity days
Exhibitons
Seminars and Schools
It would lead too far to mention here all school activities on occasion of IYOR (many of which we do not even know about). We rather focus here on three 'highlights' (and say sorry to all those not mentioned here):
To support school activities, IYOR Germany and German school teachers have produced a set of school materials which was a great success (see below). Also, IYOR-Germany has put up an internet server with many informations (see below), and a list of 32 reef scientists ready to go to schools (see below). School activities were supported and partly sponsored by governmental organisations including cultural ministeries of individual states of Germany. Special full day seminars for school teachers were also performed (e.g. by Winfried Werner, Munich, Uli Erfurth, Munich and Reinhold Leinfelder, Stuttgart).
Diving Seminars
A large number of diving seminars both for divers and dive instructors was presented during IYOR, from many of which we do not have detailed informations. Below is a selected, yet incomplete list of events. Again sorry to all those not mentioned here.
Public lectures
The German IYOR coordination team succeeded in organizing and initiating many public talks on reef topics during IYOR (some of which are still to come). The IYOR-Team was also very active by presenting talks itself. We managed to organize and initiate 58 IYOR-talks in Germany (and we are sure that there were more), including international participation (e.g. Robert Ginsburg, Sue Wells, Nancy Knowlton and Jeremy Jackson). Many thanks to all who organised or presented talks. The full list of presented talks (and talks to come) is still available in the internet.
Production of material and compilation of ressources
Internet: Iyor-Germany was largely organised through the internet. The www-service of IYOR-Germany (http://www.geologie.uni-stuttgart.de/iyor) provided (and keeps on providing) information on reefs, importance of reefs, dangers of reefs, solutions including many images, downloadable texts, press releases, information and ressources for teachers, divers, media and the general public, a reef scientist list, full online articles (including the Jurassic Reef Park), and the complete listing of all activities during IYOR (plus those to come for IYO). (done by Reinhold Leinfelder).
Folders and Flyers: More than 30.000 two-colour and four-colour folders and flyers on IYOR were produced by the IYOR coordination group (plus about 100.000 flyers for the boot-fair). Sponsored by Scuba Pro, University of Stuttgart, German Research Foundation and Förderkreis Sporttauchen e.V. (boot fair flyers sponsored by the boot organisation).
Information Material: Printed information material, based on the internet service was also available for those not having access to the internet
School Book: A set of materials for schools, including general articles by reef scientists, working sheets by school teachers and a ressource collection by IYOR-Germany was published in manuscript form. The enormous success of this material forced us to publish this material in extended form as a full book, which will be released in Early March 98 (editors Reinhold Leinfelder, Ulrich Kull and Franz Brümmer, Stuttgart). Sponsored by Oberschulamt Stuttgart, University Stuttgart, German Research Foundation.
Reef Video: On occasion of the Senckenberg-Exhibition and IYOR a new reef video, focussing on reef protection was produced by Dirk Ritter Productions. The video is particulary designed for schools.
Condor Video: Under collaboration with IYOR-Germany Condor, a sister company of Lufthansa, and one of the largest German charter air carrier produced a board video on reef protection which was shown in all destinations leaving Germany from summer onwards.
Reef Map: A German reef map based on the english version of the map of the World Conservation Montoring Center is presently in print (available in March). Produced by Franz Brümmer and Reinhold Leinfelder, sponsored by German Research Foundation, University of Stuttgart, Senckenberg Institution Frankfurt, Geomar Kiel and private donations to IYOR-Germany.
The Städte-unter-Wasser-Book. On occasion of the Senckenberg-Exhibition a book with many articles on reef and reef problems was produced by Senckenberg. 36 reef scientists participated in the book which includes many coloured photos.
Articles written by IYOR Germany: Several articles on reef issues were written by IYOR-Germany and published in various ways. Many are available online through the Internet Service of IYOR Germany (the most successfull of these is the Jurassic Reef Park, in German and English, which not only focusses on Jurassic reefs but also on modern reefs), in diving magazines, or other print media. Perhaps the largest outreach had a 4-page article by Franz Brümmer and Reinhold Leinfelder published in a TV-Journal which is freely distributed with the major daily newspapers of southern Germany (1,8 Million exemplars).
TV reports: Besides being intervied several times, members of the IYOR coordination group actively participated in the production of TV emissions on Reef Check, fossil reefs and other reef topics. (see also below).
Impact on the Media
Report activity on IYOR in Germany by the media was increasing throughout the year. In the early months of the year, the main focus was on diving magazines whereas later on the other media was increasingly aware of iyor. Special events such as the opening of exhibitions on IYOR or activity days, and particularly Reef Check, would help in attracting attention. TV, Radio, and dayly newspapers frequently reported on IYOR. It is astonishing, how many reports on reefs are presently given in the TV, which also might be an effect of the Unesco IYO-Year.
We are by fare not aware of all articles and TV/Radio reports on IYOR but do have a selection of them listed in the Internet.
