She's a scientist so of course she doesn't believe it at first.
There's no such thing as magic, she'll tell Mulder, with that
sceptical tone of voice and the raised eyebrow that he's come
to know so well. Everything happens for a reason, a scientific
reason. You just need to look at the evidence, study the facts.
Form a hypothesis and gather enough data to either support or
refute it. Saying something is magic is just an escape clause,
an easy answer when you can't, or won't, explain why something
happened the way it did.
So it's only natural that she'll reject Mulder's claims at
first, when he presents her with his supposedly magical find
at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon.
"Hey Scully! Check this out!" he crows excitedly, breaking
the quiet of their office and the tedium of expense reports.
She looks up expectedly, anticipating another game of 'how
many pencils will fit in one ceiling tile' or maybe the
classic 'let's dig up some really obscure paranormal
phenomenon in the back of beyond so we can skip out of work
early and spend all weekend investigating'. To Scully's
surprise however, Mulder is waving neither a box of pencils
nor a familiar red and white striped file at her, but rather
her very own set of keys.
"Yes Mulder. They're my keys" she tells him patiently. "You
borrowed them earlier to get the reports from the back of
my car."
"Ah but what you don't know Scully is that these are magic keys."
"Magic keys Mulder?" she queries with her customary eyebrow
raise.
"Yep. With these keys I can conjure up whole new worlds.
Magical landscapes full of wonder and delight where all your
dreams can come true."
He's grinning at her so enthusiastically that she really
doesn't have the heart to resist. It's almost quitting time
anyway and they've had a long week. She's ready for some fun.
Gathering up her bag and coat, Scully drops a quick kiss on the
top of Mulder's head before snatching back her keys and heading
for the door.
"Come on then Mulder. I guess we're staying at my place
tonight. Now move than ass magic boy."
