Forschung

Chemische Ökologie tritrophischer Systeme: Interaktionen zwischen Pflanzen, herbivoren Insekten und Parasitoiden.

Pflanzen sind einer Vielzahl von abiotischen und biotischen Stressoren ausgesetzt und haben dementsprechend eine Vielzahl von Abwehrmechanismen und -strategien entwickelt, die sich von der Ebene des Moleküls bis zu ihrer Funktion im Ökosystem manifestieren. Chemische Signale der Pflanze spielen bei der Abwehr von herbivoren Insekten eine herausragende Rolle, können diese selbst adressieren, aber auch höhere trophische Ebenen wie Parasitoide mit einbeziehen. Parasitoide herbivorer Insekten stehen bei der Wirtsfindung vor dem Problem, für ihre Orientierung Stimuli nutzen zu müssen, die leicht auffindbar sind und zugleich verlässlich eine Wirtspräsenz indizieren.

Vergleichende Untersuchungen von unterschiedlichen Pflanze-Herbivor- Parasitoid-Systemen, die das Vorkommen natürlicher Populationen, die Physiologie, das Verhalten, die Sinnesökologie und die Kommunikation aller beteiligten Organismen berücksichtigen, sollen Erkenntnisse zum Verständnis dieser Systeme liefern.
