Dahlem Talk on Europe II: “Shall Turkey join the EU?“, June 9, 2007
Participants were – apart from Prof. Dr. Tanja A. Börzel:
• Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Wehler, Universität Bielefeld,
• Dr. Claire Demesmay, Institut Français des Relations Internationales, Paris,
• Mehmet Gökhan Tuncer, Center for Politics of the Mideast, Otto-Suhr-Instituts, Freie Universität Berlin
Dr. Sabine von Oppeln led the discussion as chair.
The question of EU membership of Turkey has been widely discussed ever since first steps to admittance were taken in the 1960s. In recent times, the discussion was central to the overall debate on the future development of the European Union. In addition to the evaluation of economic and political progress in Turkey and the country’s ability to fulfil accession criteria this is part of a basic understanding of identity, order, borders and perspective of the EU.
